In brief

Alexander David Bregman (born March 30, 1994) is an American professional baseball third baseman for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Bregman attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where he was named the National Freshman of the Year in 2013 and won the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top shortstop that year. In 2015, his junior year, he earned First-Team All-American honors from multiple organizations, was a Golden Spikes Award finalist, and led the Tigers to the College World Series. The Houston Astros selected him second overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, and he made his major league debut on July 25, 2016, after a brief minor league stint where he was named the USA Today Minor League Player of the Year.

Alexander David Bregman was born on March 30, 1994, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to parents Sam and Jackie Bregman, both attorneys who met while attending law school at the University of New Mexico. His father, Sam, had previously played baseball at the University of New Mexico, fostering an early family connection to the sport. The Bregmans are of Jewish heritage, with roots tracing back to Russian Jewish immigrants; Bregman's grandfather, Stan Bregman, served as general counsel for the Washington Senators. The family raised Bregman in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights neighborhood, where he attended preschool at Congregation Albert starting at age three and actively participated in the local Jewish community, including his bar mitzvah there.
