Alexandre Tansman (12 June 1897 – 15 November 1986) was a Polish-born composer, pianist, and conductor of Jewish descent who emigrated to France in 1919, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1938. Born in Łódź to a cultured middle-class family, he studied both music and law in Warsaw, completing his education in 1918 before moving to Paris, where he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene of the École de Paris.

Tansman produced over 300 compositions across genres including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, operas, ballets, and film scores, earning acclaim for his neoclassical style that blended French influences from Ravel and Stravinsky with Polish folk elements and rhythmic vitality. His works premiered with leading orchestras and performers such as the Boston Symphony, Jascha Heifetz, and Andrés Segovia, and he received commissions from institutions like the Library of Congress. Notable pieces include the Second Piano Concerto (1927), Sixth Symphony (1944), and Suite in modo polonico for guitar, reflecting his polytonal experiments and adaptations of baroque forms.

During World War II, listed on a Nazi blacklist, Tansman fled occupied France for the United States in 1941, working in Hollywood on film scores—including a 1946 Academy Award nomination—before returning to Paris in 1946 to continue his career. He maintained close ties with composers like Igor Stravinsky and members of Les Six, and late in life received honors such as Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1986. Tansman's oeuvre exemplifies a synthesis of national heritage and cosmopolitan modernism, contributing significantly to 20th-century music despite relative obscurity in some repertoires today.
