Full articleAlvin Sargent (April 12, 1927 – May 9, 2019) was an American screenwriter best known for winning two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay for Julia (1977) and Ordinary People (1980), and for his later contributions to the Spider-Man film franchise.
Born Alvin Supowitz in Philadelphia to parents Isaac Supowitz and Esther Kadansky, Sargent grew up in a Jewish family alongside his older brother Herb, who also became a television writer and producer. He dropped out of Upper Darby High School during World War II and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he learned typing through Morse code training, an experience that later aided his writing career. After the war, Sargent moved to Los Angeles, initially working odd jobs such as delivering suits for director Cecil B. DeMille, before transitioning to writing in the late 1950s with television episodes for series like Ben Casey, Naked City, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
Sargent's feature film career began with the 1966 thriller Gambit, but he gained critical acclaim in the 1970s for adaptations including the Oscar-nominated Paper Moon (1973) and the Best Adapted Screenplay winners Julia (1977), based on a story by Lillian Hellman, and Ordinary People (1980), directed by Robert Redford and drawn from Judith Guest's novel. His work often explored complex family dynamics and emotional depth, reflecting influences from his television background and personal experiences, such as a real-life armed intruder incident that inspired an unproduced script. In the 2000s, Sargent revitalized his career by co-writing the Spider-Man films Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), blending his literary style with action-oriented storytelling. Over his lifetime, he penned more than two dozen screenplays, earning a reputation for versatile, character-driven narratives across genres from drama to superhero fantasy.
On a personal note, Sargent was married to Joan Creears until their 1975 divorce, with whom he had daughters Amanda and Jennifer; he later formed a long-term partnership with producer Laura Ziskin starting in 1987, marrying her in 2010 shortly before her death in 2011, and they shared stepdaughter Julia Barry. Sargent passed away in Seattle at age 92, leaving a legacy as one of Hollywood's most enduring adapters of literary works to the screen.
