Born Bernard Schwartz on June 3, 1925, in Manhattan, New York City, to Hungarian Jewish immigrant parents, he grew up in poverty, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and studied acting in New York before adopting the stage name Tony Curtis upon signing with Universal Pictures in 1948.
He achieved stardom in the 1950s as a leading man, starring in notable films including Houdini (1953), The Defiant Ones (1958), Some Like It Hot (1959), and Spartacus (1960), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role opposite Sidney Poitier in The Defiant Ones. His work showcased range across comedy, drama, and historical epics, with particularly acclaimed performances in Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and The Boston Strangler (1968).
Schwartz's popularity peaked in the postwar Hollywood era, bolstered by his marriage to actress Janet Leigh and frequent collaborations with major directors and co-stars. He also served as chairman and CEO of K&F Industries, Inc., and president and CEO of Globalstar Telecommunications. He retired from Loral and his positions at its various subsidiaries and affiliates as of March 1, 2006.
He was latterly the chairman and CEO of BLS Investments, his own investment firm located in Manhattan.
