Charles Gordon is a British Army officer known for his daring military leadership in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion in China during the 1860s, earning him the nickname "Chinese Gordon," and for his heroic yet doomed defense of Khartoum in 1885, where he was killed during the Mahdist uprising in Sudan.

Born Charles George Gordon on 28 January 1833 in Woolwich, England, into a military family, he was educated at the Royal Military Academy and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1852. He first gained recognition for his bravery during the Crimean War, serving in the Siege of Sevastopol in 1855, where he mapped enemy positions, constructed trenches under heavy fire, and earned honors including the Crimean War medal and the French Legion of Honour. Following the war, he participated in international boundary commissions in regions such as Romania and Armenia, further establishing his reputation as a capable engineer and surveyor.

Gordon's most celebrated exploits came in China during the Taiping Rebellion, when he took command of the Ever Victorious Army in 1863. He reorganized the previously disorganized force, led successful campaigns that captured key strongholds, and played a decisive role in defeating the rebellion, for which he received high Chinese imperial honors including the Yellow Jacket and the rank of Mandarin. These achievements made him a national hero in Britain and cemented his nickname "Chinese Gordon." After returning to England, he devoted himself to charitable work with underprivileged youth in Gravesend before accepting administrative roles abroad.

In the 1870s, Gordon served in Sudan under Egyptian authority, first as governor of the Equatorial Province and later as Governor-General of Sudan, where he focused on suppressing the slave trade, establishing outposts, and combating corruption despite significant challenges and opposition. He briefly held other postings in South Africa and elsewhere before being recalled in 1884 to Khartoum amid the rising Mahdist revolt led by Muhammad Ahmad. Tasked with evacuating Egyptian and European personnel, he instead chose to remain and defend the city, holding out through a grueling siege that lasted nearly a year until Mahdist forces overran Khartoum on 26 January 1885, killing Gordon just days before a British relief expedition arrived. His death sparked widespread mourning and elevated him to iconic status in Victorian Britain as a symbol of courage, faith, and humanitarian zeal.
