In brief
James Dalton Trumbo (December 9, 1905 – September 10, 1976) was an American screenwriter, novelist, and playwright whose career spanned prolific scriptwriting for Hollywood films and the anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun (1939), which won the National Book Award in 1940.
A confirmed member of the Communist Party USA since December 1943, Trumbo joined the Screen Writers Guild and actively supported leftist causes, including opposition to fascism during World War II; however, his allegiance persisted post-war amid revelations of Soviet atrocities under Stalin.
