In brief

Diego Schwartzman (born 16 August 1992) is an Argentine former professional tennis player. Standing 170 cm tall, he turned professional in 2010 and retired in February 2025 following the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. Right-handed with a two-handed backhand, Schwartzman amassed a 251–226 win–loss record on the ATP Tour, securing four singles titles, including the 2018 Rio Open. He reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 8 on 12 October 2020, becoming one of the shortest players to enter the top 10 in the Open Era, renowned for his speed, defensive prowess, and relentless baseline aggression that challenged taller opponents. Schwartzman's notable achievements include semifinals at the 2020 French Open and finals at ATP Masters 1000 events such as the Italian Open, amassing over $14 million in prize money.

Diego Schwartzman was born on August 16, 1992, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to parents Ricardo Sebastián Schwartzman and Silvana Schwartzman. He grew up in a Jewish family of Ashkenazi descent, with ancestral roots among immigrants from Poland, Russia, and Germany who settled in Argentina in the early 20th century.

Schwartzman's maternal great-grandfather, a Polish Jew, survived the Holocaust by escaping from a train bound for a concentration camp during World War II. On his paternal side, his great-grandfather fled Europe around World War I, arriving in Argentina by boat while speaking only Yiddish and lacking proficiency in Spanish, which underscored the family's immigrant hardships in building a new life.

Diego Schwartzman, born on March 30, 1992, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a Jewish family with roots in Germany and Russia, was introduced to tennis at the age of seven. He began training at Club Náutico Hacoaj, a sports club established for the Jewish-Argentine community in the San Isidro neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
