Full articleEli Wallach (December 7, 1915 – June 24, 2014) was an American actor renowned for his versatile character roles across film, television, and stage, with a career spanning more than seven decades.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Wallach grew up in a predominantly Italian neighborhood and was one of the few Jewish children there. He attended the University of Texas at Austin for his bachelor's degree and earned a master's in education from City College of New York, training as a teacher as a backup to his acting aspirations; he later studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in Manhattan under Sanford Meisner. During World War II, he served as a captain in the U.S. Medical Administrative Corps.
Wallach made his Broadway debut in 1945 and achieved early acclaim with a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role as Alvaro Mangiacavallo in Tennessee Williams's The Rose Tattoo in 1951. Transitioning to film in 1956, he gained prominence for his portrayal of the predatory Silva Vacarro in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll, followed by iconic roles such as the bandit leader Calvera in The Magnificent Seven (1960), the opportunistic Tuco in Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), and Ben Harris, a frustrated mailman, in The Tiger Makes Out (1967). Often typecast in ethnic roles like Mexicans and Italians despite his heritage, Wallach appeared in over 80 films, including The Misfits (1961), How the West Was Won (1962), and The Godfather Part III (1990) as Don Altobello. His television work earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Drama for the television movie The Poppy Is Also a Flower (1966). In 2010, he received an Honorary Academy Award for his lifetime achievement.
Wallach was married to actress Anne Jackson from 1948 until her death in 2016, though he predeceased her; the couple frequently collaborated on stage and had three children: Peter, Roberta, and Katherine. He died at his home in Manhattan at the age of 98.
