In brief

Ernest Henry Gruening (February 6, 1887 – June 26, 1974) was an American journalist and Democratic politician who served as Governor of the Alaska Territory from 1939 to 1953 and as a United States Senator from Alaska from 1959 to 1969. Born in New York City to a family of German Jewish descent, Gruening graduated from Harvard College in 1907 and Harvard Medical School in 1912 but chose a career in journalism, editing publications such as The Nation and the New York Post while advocating for labor rights and minority protections. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as director of the Division of Territories and Island Possessions in 1934, he later became Governor of Alaska, where he championed economic expansion, efficient natural resource use, and equality for Alaskan Natives, including signing the territory's Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945. Known as the "father of Alaska statehood," Gruening's persistent advocacy from the 1930s culminated in Alaska's admission as the 49th state in 1959, following his election to the Senate in 1958. In the Senate, he supported civil rights and foreign aid reforms but gained national prominence as one of only two senators—alongside Wayne Morse—to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in 1964, presciently dissenting against escalating U.S. military involvement in Vietnam.

Ernest Henry Gruening was born on February 6, 1887, in New York City to a Jewish family of German origin. His father, Emil Gruening, was a German immigrant who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War and established himself as a prominent physician specializing in eye and ear surgery. His mother, Phebe Fridenberg Gruening, came from a similar assimilated background, contributing to a middle-class household that prioritized education and intellectual development.
