In brief
Eusebio Ayala (14 August 1875 – 4 June 1942) was a Paraguayan politician, lawyer, and statesman who served as provisional president from November 1921 to 1923 and as constitutional president from August 1932 to February 1936. A member of the Liberal Party, Ayala rose from modest origins to become a prominent intellectual and educator before entering politics, where he held legislative and diplomatic roles. His second presidency coincided with the Chaco War against Bolivia, during which he granted General José Félix Estigarribia extensive military autonomy, enabling Paraguay to secure territorial gains despite heavy casualties on both sides. Ayala's administration emphasized national unity and effective coordination between civilian leadership and military command, contributing to Paraguay's strategic successes in the conflict. His term ended with a military coup on 17 February 1936, leading to his ouster, imprisonment, and eventual exile in Buenos Aires, where he died.
