In brief

Gavin Shane DeGraw (born February 4, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter and musician known for his piano-driven pop-rock style and emotive lyrics. DeGraw rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his debut studio album Chariot (2003), which featured the breakout single "I Don't Want to Be," a track that topped the Billboard Adult Pop Airplay chart and gained widespread recognition as the opening theme for the television series One Tree Hill. The album's success established DeGraw as a key figure in the singer-songwriter revival, blending soulful influences with contemporary production, and has sold over a million copies in the United States. Over the subsequent two decades, DeGraw has released seven additional studio albums, including Face the River (2022), inspired by the deaths of his parents, and Chariot 20 (2024), a reimagined anniversary edition of his debut, demonstrating sustained artistic evolution and commercial viability through consistent touring and chart performance. His catalog has earned a Grammy nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media for the duet "We Both Know" with Colbie Caillat in 2014, alongside multiple BMI Pop Awards for songwriting achievements. In 2011, DeGraw survived a severe street assault in New York City that resulted in a concussion and broken nose, an incident that briefly interrupted his career but underscored his resilience.

His father was of Irish descent and his mother was of Russian Jewish ancestry.

Gavin DeGraw was born on February 4, 1977, in South Fallsburg, New York, the youngest of three children to parents Lynne DeGraw (née Krieger, 1951–2017) and John Wayne DeGraw. His mother worked as a detox specialist and nurse practitioner, while his father served as a prison guard; the couple, high school sweethearts from the area, raised their family in the small, working-class town of South Fallsburg.

DeGraw's older siblings included sister Neeka and brother Joseph (Joey) DeGraw, the latter also pursuing a career as a musician alongside Gavin's early interests. The family environment emphasized music as an integral part of daily life, with DeGraw's mother performing and singing in church settings and his father playing professionally in local bars for years. This musical household influenced DeGraw from a young age; he began singing and playing piano at eight years old, immersing himself in genres ranging from classic rock to soul amid the blue-collar realities of his parents' professions.

South Fallsburg's proximity to a prison shaped aspects of DeGraw's upbringing, as his father's job placed the family in a community tied to correctional facilities, fostering a grounded perspective on labor and resilience that later informed his songwriting. DeGraw has described his parents as contrasting figures—his mother more nurturing and health-focused, his father stoic and hardworking—whose differing approaches instilled in him a blend of emotional depth and perseverance.
