Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish immigrant parents Miriam Klein and Harry Keitel, he grew up in the Brighton Beach neighborhood and attended Abraham Lincoln High School before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. Keitel began his career in off-Broadway theater in the 1960s and made his film debut in Martin Scorsese's Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967), launching a decades-long collaboration with the director that included iconic roles in Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976).
