Harvey Keitel

Harvey Keitel (born May 13, 1939) is an American actor and producer known for his intense method acting style and portrayals of gritty, morally complex characters in landmark films. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish immigrant parents Miriam Klein and Harry Keitel, he grew up in the Brighton Beach neighborhood and attended Abraham Lincoln High School before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. Keitel began his career in off-Broadway theater in the 1960s and made his film debut in Martin Scorsese's Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967), launching a decades-long collaboration with the director that included iconic roles in Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976).

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Keitel earned acclaim for his work in films like Blue Collar (1978) and European productions, often embodying tough-guy archetypes with a nuanced depth. His career resurgence in the 1990s featured standout performances in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994), as well as Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant (1992) and Jane Campion's The Piano (1993), the latter earning him the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor. Keitel received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe win for his role as Mickey Cohen in Bugsy (1991), along with an Independent Spirit Award win for Best Male Lead in Bad Lieutenant (1992).

In addition to acting, Keitel has produced films through his company The Goatsingers and remains active in the industry, with recent roles in The Irishman (2019), Paradox Effect (2024), and upcoming films in 2025, while maintaining a private personal life married to actress Daphna Kastner since 2001 and father to three children.
