Story

Henry Moskowitz came up through New York’s settlement houses, where reform meant rent, wages, and the right to be treated as a citizen. He was among the small group that founded the NAACP in 1909.

He later worked in city government and civic campaigns with his wife, Belle Moskowitz. The through-line was practical: make the city’s machinery serve people who did not own it.
