In brief

Hoyte van Hoytema is a Dutch-Swedish cinematographer renowned for his visually innovative work on major films, including collaborations with directors Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele, and he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Oppenheimer (2023).

Born on October 4, 1971, in Horgen, Switzerland, to Dutch parents, van Hoytema was raised in the Netherlands and holds dual Dutch-Swedish nationality. After twice being rejected by the Netherlands Film Academy, he pursued his passion for filmmaking by studying cinematography at the prestigious National Film School in Łódź, Poland, where he honed his technical and artistic skills. Early in his career, he faced challenges, including periods of unemployment, working in a soap factory, and playing in a band, before transitioning into the industry as a clapper loader for cinematographer Jules van den Steenhoven and a camera trainee under the legendary Robby Müller. His first director of photography credit came on a Swedish television series while still in Poland, marking the start of a prolific career that spans independent European cinema to blockbuster Hollywood productions.
