In brief

Idan Raichel (Hebrew: עידן רייכל; born 12 September 1977) is an Israeli singer-songwriter, musician, producer, and composer renowned for founding The Idan Raichel Project, a collaborative musical endeavor that fuses Ethiopian, Middle Eastern, African, Latin American, and global sounds with Israeli pop and electronic production.

Raichel's career began with classical training on accordion and keyboards, followed by service in the Israel Defense Forces band and work as a backup musician for established artists. In 2002, while experimenting in his parents' basement, he recorded demos featuring over 30 mostly Ethiopian immigrant singers, leading to the breakthrough single "Bo'i" (Come), which blended Amharic and Hebrew lyrics over entrancing rhythms and became a massive hit, selling quadruple platinum in Israel with over 153,000 units for the debut album.

Idan Raichel was born on September 12, 1977, in Kfar Saba, Israel, a suburban city north of Tel Aviv. He grew up in a family of Ashkenazi Jewish descent with roots in Eastern Europe. Although some accounts have suggested Sephardi or Mizrahi heritage, Raichel's ancestry is documented as entirely Ashkenazi, reflecting the Eastern European origins emphasized in his biographical profiles.

Raichel was raised by liberal-minded parents in a household where music played a role, though they placed limited emphasis on formal pursuit of it. His childhood in Kfar Saba exposed him to the diverse cultural fabric of Israeli society, including interactions across ethnic Jewish communities, which later informed his broader artistic interests without direct familial ties to non-Ashkenazi traditions. The family's Eastern European background aligned with typical Ashkenazi immigrant experiences in Israel, contributing to a home environment that valued openness to various cultural influences amid the country's multicultural urban-suburban setting.

Raichel began playing the accordion at age nine, introduced by his mother, and developed an early attraction to gypsy music and tango. As a teenager in the 1990s Israeli music scene, he transitioned to keyboards, drawn to their electronic capabilities and potential for experimentation with sounds. This shift reflected his growing fascination with technology and innovative production techniques, amid a local culture blending Hebrew pop with emerging global influences accessible via radio broadcasts.
