In brief
Igor Oistrakh (27 April 1931 – 14 August 2021) was a prominent Soviet-born violinist, violist, conductor, and pedagogue, best known for his elegant interpretations of the classical and Romantic repertoire, as well as his frequent collaborations with his father, the legendary violinist David Oistrakh. Born in Odessa, Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union), to David Oistrakh and pianist Tamara Rotareva (also known as Rotaryova), Igor began studying the violin at a young age under his father's guidance and went on to establish an international career that spanned over seven decades. He married pianist Natalia Zertsalova in 1960, with whom he had a son, Valery Oistrakh, also a violinist and violist.
Oistrakh's formal education took place at the Central Music School in Moscow, where he studied with violinist Valeria Merenblum, followed by enrollment at the Moscow Conservatory in 1949 under his father's tutelage. His career gained momentum early with victories at the Budapest International Violin Competition in 1949 and the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in 1952, which propelled him onto the global stage. He made his London debut in 1953 at the Royal Albert Hall and his New York debut in 1962 at Carnegie Hall with the Symphony of the Air, marking him as one of the first Soviet musicians to tour the West extensively during the Cold War era. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, he emigrated to Belgium, where he continued his teaching career. Throughout his solo career, Oistrakh recorded major works such as the violin concertos of Brahms, Elgar, and Shostakovich, as well as sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven, and Prokofiev, often alongside his wife. His accolades included the People's Artist of the USSR title, the Grand Prix du Disque in 1961, fellowship of the Royal College of Music in London, and honorary memberships in the Beethoven Society of Bonn and the Jascha Heifetz Society; additionally, asteroid 42516 was named Oistrakh in honor of him and his father in 1993.
Igor Oistrakh was born on April 27, 1931, in Odessa, Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union, into a Jewish family.
As members of a prominent Jewish family, the Oistrakhs navigated the Soviet era's ideological constraints and antisemitic undercurrents. This heritage, inherited from Igor's parents, underscored a resilient family bond amid the era's ideological constraints.
