Full articleJames Edward Franco (born April 19, 1978) is an American actor, director, producer, screenwriter, teacher, and author. He first gained widespread recognition for portraying Daniel Desario in the short-lived television series Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000). Franco achieved further prominence as Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007). His performance as real-life mountaineer Aron Ralston in 127 Hours (2010) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist (2017). Franco has directed, produced, and starred in numerous independent films and maintained an active presence in academia, earning multiple degrees including a Ph.D. in English. In 2018, he faced public allegations of sexual misconduct from former students at his acting studio, which he denied as inaccurate; a class-action lawsuit related to these claims was settled for $2.2 million in 2021 without an admission of liability.
In brief
Franco first reached a wide audience in a superhero trilogy, then kept taking roles that did not match. Drama, satire, and a soap-opera cameo sat on the same resume.
He has directed, taught, and collaborated often with Seth Rogen. The through-line is appetite — for parts, for school, for another try.
