In brief
Jay Rosenblatt is an American experimental documentary filmmaker known for his innovative use of found footage and collage techniques to explore deeply personal yet universally resonant psychological and emotional themes. He has worked as an independent artist since 1980, producing more than 100 films that draw from archival materials, newsreels, home movies, and other sources to examine complex human experiences including loss, childhood socialization, masculinity, power dynamics, and historical memory.
Rosenblatt's background as a former therapist with a master's degree in counseling psychology profoundly influences his introspective approach, often blending personal reflection with broader ethical and social questions. He has taught film and video production for more than two decades at institutions including Stanford University and the San Francisco Art Institute, and served as Program Director of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival for fifteen years.
