In brief

Joaquin Rafael Phoenix (born October 28, 1974) is an American actor recognized for his intense performances in psychologically demanding roles. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to parents Arlyn and John Bottom, Phoenix grew up in a nomadic family that briefly affiliated with the Children of God religious group, leading to travels across South America and experiences of hardship that influenced his worldview. His older brother, River Phoenix, was also an actor who died of a drug overdose in 1993, an event that profoundly affected Joaquin's life and career.

Phoenix began acting as a child, initially using the name Leaf Phoenix, with early roles in films like Parenthood (1989). He gained critical acclaim for portraying the ruthless Commodus in Gladiator (2000), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, followed by his transformative depiction of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line (2005), which won him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. His career peaked with the role of Arthur Fleck in Joker (2019), a portrayal of mental unraveling that secured him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2020. Other notable films include Her (2013), The Master (2012), and You Were Never Really Here (2017), often showcasing his commitment to method acting and unconventional characters.

Joaquin Phoenix was born Joaquin Rafael Bottom on October 28, 1974, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to parents Arlyn Dunetz and John Lee Bottom. Arlyn, born in the Bronx, New York City, to Jewish parents of Russian descent, had traveled to California in the late 1960s amid the counterculture movement; John, raised in California where he worked as a songwriter, met her in 1968 while she was hitchhiking and they married in 1969. The couple had their first child, River, in a log cabin in Oregon in 1970, followed by daughter Rain in Texas in 1972.
