In brief
John Allan Yarmuth (born November 4, 1947) is an American politician and former newspaper publisher who served as the U.S. representative for Kentucky's 3rd congressional district from 2007 to 2023. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Yarmuth graduated from J.M. Atherton High School and earned a B.A. from Yale University in 1969. Prior to entering politics, he worked in public relations and journalism, founding the alternative weekly newspaper Louisville Today in 1976 and later the Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO) in 1990, which he owned and published until 2006. Yarmuth, a Democrat, was elected to the House in 2006, defeating Republican incumbent Anne Northup in a competitive race, and went on to win reelection seven times in the increasingly Democratic-leaning district, which encompasses Louisville. During his tenure, he served on the Budget Committee from 2009 onward, becoming its ranking member in 2017 and chair from 2019 to 2023, where he played a key role in advancing reconciliation legislation including the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Yarmuth's legislative record emphasized fiscal policies aligned with Democratic priorities, though few of his sponsored bills became standalone law. Yarmuth announced his retirement in October 2021, citing a desire for greater personal control over his time at age 74 and to spend more with family, amid frustrations with congressional gridlock. His departure left Kentucky without a Democratic House representative for the first time since 1995. While Yarmuth faced policy criticisms from conservatives over votes against certain defense authorizations and support for expansive spending, no major personal scandals marked his career.
John Allan Yarmuth was born on November 4, 1947, in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, to Stanley R. Yarmuth and Edna Elaine (née Klein) Yarmuth. His parents belonged to Louisville's Jewish community, with Yarmuth descending from Jewish immigrants who had settled in the United States.
Yarmuth was raised in Louisville, immersed in the local Jewish milieu amid the social dynamics of the 1950s and 1960s, including encounters with antisemitic discrimination. He attended J.M. Atherton High School in Louisville, where he graduated after serving as president of the student government.
