In brief
Jonathan Simon Djanogly (born 3 June 1965) is a British solicitor and former Conservative Party politician who represented Huntingdon as a Member of Parliament from 2001 until 2024. Educated at University College School in Hampstead and Oxford Polytechnic, Djanogly qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and became a partner in a commercial law firm specializing in trade and business advisory services. Prior to entering Parliament, he served as a councillor on Westminster City Council from 1994 to 2001 and unsuccessfully contested Oxford East in the 1997 general election.
In opposition, Djanogly held shadow ministerial roles, including Shadow Solicitor General from 2005 to 2010, Shadow Minister for Corporate Governance from 2006 to 2009, and Shadow Minister for Business from 2009 to 2010. Following the 2010 general election, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice, where he oversaw initiatives such as the merger of HM Courts Service with the Tribunals Service to form HM Courts and Tribunals Service and efforts to curb referral fees in personal injury litigation. He left the ministerial post in 2012 and continued as a backbench MP, chairing All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Georgia and corporate responsibility while occasionally rebelling against government positions, including on COVID-19 vaccine passports.
Jonathan Djanogly was born in 1965 in London to a wealthy British Jewish family. He is the eldest son of Sir Harry Djanogly, a prominent textile manufacturer whose business interests generated a family fortune estimated at £300 million, and Lady Carol Djanogly. His father, born in France in 1938, had immigrated to the United Kingdom as a child to escape Nazi persecution, later building success in the textile industry after naturalization as a British citizen.
Djanogly grew up in an affluent household shaped by his family's industrial heritage and Jewish cultural traditions, with early exposure to private education at University College School in Hampstead, London. This privileged upbringing, amid the resources of a multimillionaire family business, provided a stable and materially secure environment during his formative years in the capital.
