In brief
Lilly McDaniel Ledbetter (April 14, 1938 – October 12, 2024) was an American manufacturing supervisor and civil rights litigant whose employment discrimination lawsuit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company alleged that the company engaged in gender-based pay disparities through a performance evaluation system that disadvantaged her relative to male peers.
Ledbetter worked for nearly two decades at a Goodyear tire plant in Gadsden, Alabama, starting in 1979 as one of the few female supervisors in an otherwise male-dominated environment. In 1998, near retirement, she received an anonymous memorandum revealing that her salary was substantially lower than that of three male managers with similar tenure, prompting her to file a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and subsequently sue under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A federal jury initially awarded her compensatory and punitive damages in 2003, finding intentional discrimination, but the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals reversed, holding insufficient evidence tied pay decisions to gender rather than merit-based evaluations.
