Mike Medavoy (born January 21, 1941) is an American film producer and executive of Russian-Jewish descent, recognized for his pivotal roles in Hollywood studio leadership and independent production. Born in Shanghai, China, to Russian émigré parents, Medavoy spent part of his childhood in Chile before emigrating to the United States, where he graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1963. His career began in 1964 at Universal Studios, progressing from the mailroom to casting director and talent agent, before ascending to executive positions. In 1978, he co-founded Orion Pictures, where he oversaw the production and distribution of acclaimed films including Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, Network, and Coming Home, contributing to the studio's reputation for bold, auteur-driven cinema during a period of industry transformation. Following a tenure as chairman of TriStar Pictures, Medavoy established Phoenix Pictures in 1995, serving as its chairman and CEO; under his leadership, the company has produced notable works such as The People vs. Larry Flynt, The Mirror Has Two Faces, and U-571, among others. Throughout his five-decade career, Medavoy has been involved in over 300 feature films, with 17 receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and seven securing the award, underscoring his influence on commercially and critically successful cinema.
