Miriam Schapiro, born in Canada and made in American studios, refused the old split between fine art and the sewing basket. Hearts, kimonos, and six-foot fans became serious surfaces — pink without apology.
She helped lead a generation that treated decoration as intellect. The paintings do not ask permission of the museum. They walk in carrying the household with them.
