In brief
Nathaniel Branden (born Nathan Blumenthal; April 9, 1930 – December 3, 2014) was a Canadian-American psychotherapist and author who pioneered the systematic study of self-esteem as a foundational element of mental health and human efficacy. Early in his career, Branden collaborated closely with philosopher Ayn Rand, becoming her protégé, intellectual heir, and lover; he co-founded the Nathaniel Branden Institute in 1958 to lecture on and disseminate her Objectivist philosophy across North America, significantly expanding its reach through organized courses and publications. Their professional and personal relationship, which began in 1954 when Branden was 24 and Rand was 49, ended acrimoniously in 1968 after Branden confessed to pursuing an affair with another woman, prompting Rand to publicly denounce him and leading to the dissolution of their joint ventures. Thereafter, Branden established an independent psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles and authored over twenty books, including The Psychology of Self-Esteem (1969), which introduced his theory linking self-esteem to rational living and productivity, and The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem (1994), outlining practices for cultivating it through living consciously, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, living purposefully, and personal integrity. His therapeutic methods, emphasizing sentence-completion exercises and cognitive-behavioral techniques to build self-efficacy, influenced clinical psychology and self-improvement literature, positioning self-esteem not as unearned praise but as earned through objective achievement and reality-oriented judgment.
Nathaniel Branden was born Nathan Blumenthal on April 9,, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, to Joseph Blumenthal and Dinah (née Copp) Blumenthal, Jewish immigrants from Russia. The family soon relocated to Toronto, where Branden spent his formative years amid the economic challenges of the Great Depression and World War II era. His father's operation of a clothing shop exposed him to the practical demands of entrepreneurship, including managing inventory, customer relations, and financial risks in a competitive retail environment.
