In brief

Neal Gabler is an American author, cultural historian, and commentator specializing in the history of entertainment, celebrity, and their influence on American society. His breakthrough work, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood (1988), detailed the pivotal role of Jewish immigrants in founding the film industry and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History as well as the Theatre Library Association Award. Subsequent books include the Pulitzer finalist Winchell: Gossip, Power and the Culture of Celebrity (1994), named nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine, and Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination (2006), a New York Times bestseller that received a second Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was selected as biography of the year by USA Today. Gabler has also authored biographies of Barbra Streisand and Edward Kennedy, taught at universities including the University of Michigan and Stony Brook, hosted television programs on film criticism, and contributed essays to outlets like The Atlantic, where a 2016 piece on middle-class financial insecurity drew widespread attention for highlighting economic vulnerabilities among professionals. A Guggenheim Fellow and senior fellow at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center, Gabler is recognized for rigorous research into how media shapes cultural and political realities, often challenging prevailing narratives on industry origins and power dynamics.
