Paul Ehrlich (14 March 1854 – 20 August 1915) was a German physician and scientist of Jewish descent whose research founded key principles in hematology, immunology, and chemotherapy.

Ehrlich's early work involved selective staining of blood cells with dyes, enabling the classification of leukocytes and the identification of mast cells, which advanced understanding of cellular pathology and immune responses. He developed the side-chain theory of immunity, positing that cells produce receptor-like side chains that bind antigens and trigger antibody production, a concept central to modern immunology.

In 1908, Ehrlich shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Ilya Mechnikov for their independent investigations into immunity mechanisms. His pursuit of targeted therapies culminated in the discovery of Salvarsan (arsphenamine, compound 606) in 1909, the first chemotherapeutic agent proven effective against syphilis through systematic screening of arsenic derivatives, revolutionizing treatment of bacterial infections and establishing the paradigm of "magic bullets" for selective pathogen destruction. Ehrlich directed the Frankfurt Institute for Experimental Therapy and the Georg-Speyer-Haus, institutions that supported his prolific output of over 200 scientific papers and fostered advancements in serum standardization and antitoxin production. Paul Ehrlich was a Silesian Jewish physician who stained cells until they told him how immunity works. He shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for that research and then went looking for a drug that would hit a germ and spare the host.

He called the idea a magic bullet. Salvarsan, an arsenic compound against syphilis, was the first famous shot. It was imperfect and historic: the beginning of targeted antimicrobial therapy.

German science in his lifetime was both his home and, later, a place that would have had no room for him. He died in 1915, before the worst of that sentence. The method survived every subsequent war.

The accomplishment is a way of hunting a disease. A Jewish physician taught medicine to aim, and the twentieth century’s pharmacies are still following the aim.
