In brief
Pinhas Lavon (Hebrew: פנחס לבון; 12 July 1904 – 24 January 1976) was an Israeli politician and labor leader affiliated with the Mapai party, who served as Minister of Defense from 1953 to 1954 and as Secretary-General of the Histadrut trade union federation from 1949 to 1956. Born in Kopychintsy in Eastern Galicia (now Ukraine), Lavon immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1929, where he rose through the ranks of the Zionist labor movement, becoming a key figure in organizing workers and influencing early Israeli politics. His tenure as defense minister ended amid the Lavon Affair, a botched Israeli covert operation in Egypt known as Operation Susannah, involving bombings of Western targets to frame Arab nationalists and disrupt British withdrawal from the Suez Canal zone; Lavon maintained he did not authorize the escalated sabotage elements, leading to his resignation and a protracted political scandal that fractured Mapai leadership and contributed to David Ben-Gurion's temporary retirement. Despite the controversy, Lavon continued as Histadrut head until his ouster in 1961, amid ongoing disputes over responsibility for the affair, which exposed tensions between civilian oversight and military intelligence in Israel's security apparatus.
Pinhas Lavon, originally named Pinhas Lubianiker, was born on July 12, 1904, in Kopychyntsi (also spelled Kopyczynce or Kopizince), a town in Eastern Galicia under Austria-Hungary (now in Ukraine). His family background was Jewish, with his parents identified as Yitzhak Yosef Lubianiker and Leah Alte Lubianiker.
Lavon, born Pinḥas Lubianiker in Kopychintsy, East Galicia (now Ukraine), joined the Zionist movement in 1924 while pursuing legal studies at Lwów University (now Lviv). There, he organized branches of the Histadrut labor federation among Jewish communities in the region, promoting socialist Zionist ideals of collective labor and national revival.
Active in youth organizing, Lavon helped establish the Gordonia Labor Zionist youth movement, which emphasized pioneering agricultural work and Hebrew culture as pathways to Jewish self-sufficiency in Palestine.
