In brief
Roman Baber (born August 9, 1980) is a Canadian lawyer and Conservative politician serving as the Member of Parliament for York Centre since the 2025 federal election.) Born in the Soviet Union to a Jewish family, Baber immigrated to Israel at age eight and to Canada at fifteen, eventually settling in the York Centre area of North York, Toronto. A graduate of York University and Western University's law school, he practiced commercial and insurance litigation after being called to the Ontario Bar in 2006.
Roman Baber was born on August 9, 1980, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, to a Jewish family of Russian and Ukrainian origin. His family, like many Soviet Jews, faced antisemitism and the repressive communist regime, which prompted their decision to emigrate.
In 1988, at the age of eight, Baber and his family left the Soviet Union for Israel, seeking refuge from communism and persecution. They resided in Israel for approximately six to seven years, during which Baber adapted to a new cultural and linguistic environment amid the influx of Soviet Jewish immigrants in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
