In brief
Sarah Godlewski is an American businesswoman and Democratic politician who has served as the Secretary of State of Wisconsin since her appointment by Governor Tony Evers on March 17, 2023. Previously elected as State Treasurer in 2018, she held that office from 2019 to 2023, during which she initiated programs such as a first-time homebuyer initiative and the 401(K)ids child savings accounts, alongside producing the state's first taxpayer reports on investment performance. She has also chaired the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands since 2019, overseeing a $1.4 billion trust fund that has distributed record amounts to public schools and funded over 600 community projects.
Before entering politics, Godlewski co-founded MaSa Partners, a social impact investment firm focused on sustainable ventures, and served as a founding member of the WE Capital Fund supporting female-led businesses; earlier, she worked nearly a decade at the Pentagon in roles that involved saving taxpayer funds through efficiency measures. A fifth-generation Wisconsinite born in Eau Claire, she holds a degree in peace and conflict resolution from George Mason University. In 2022, she sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Wisconsin but placed third in the primary with 8.1% of the vote. Godlewski declared her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor in 2026, positioning herself as a pragmatic leader amid ongoing debates over election administration and government transparency, including a settled open records lawsuit accusing her office of withholding documents related to her appointment.
