Stephen Allen Schwarzman (born February 14, 1947) is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist who serves as the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Blackstone Inc., the world's largest alternative asset management firm with approximately $1.2 trillion in assets under management as of September 2025.

Schwarzman co-founded Blackstone in 1985 alongside Peter G. Peterson, initially as a mergers and acquisitions advisory firm with $400,000 in seed capital, transforming it over decades into a dominant force in private equity, real estate, credit, and multi-asset strategies through disciplined investment and operational improvements. Under his leadership, the firm has executed landmark deals and expanded globally, contributing to Schwarzman's estimated net worth of $48.1 billion as of October 2025.

A significant philanthropist, Schwarzman has committed over $1 billion to causes primarily in education and public institutions, including founding the Schwarzman Scholars program at Tsinghua University in 2013 with a $575 million endowment to train future leaders in global affairs and U.S.-China relations, alongside major donations such as $150 million to Yale University for its Center, $350 million to MIT, £150 million to Oxford University, and $100 million to the New York Public Library. He signed the Giving Pledge in 2020, committing the majority of his wealth to philanthropy. Schwarzman has also authored the memoir What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence (2019), detailing his business philosophy and experiences.

In brief

Stephen Schwarzman entered finance with a builder’s appetite. Blackstone, launched in the mid-1980s, became a house that buys, mends, and remakes companies at global scale.

He has also been a conspicuous philanthropist and campus donor. The public arguments around wealth are loud; the firm’s imprint on modern capital is simply large.
