Ted Deutch

Theodore Eliot "Ted" Deutch (born May 7, 1966) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as chief executive officer of the American Jewish Committee since October 1, 2022. A Democrat, Deutch represented Florida's 22nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2010 to 2022, following prior service in the Florida State Senate (2006–2010) and House of Representatives (2000–2006). In Congress, he chaired the House Ethics Committee from 2015 to 2019 and the Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties from 2019 to 2022, while advocating for measures against antisemitism and in support of Israel, including legislation countering the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. Deutch resigned from the House in September 2022 to lead the American Jewish Committee, an organization focused on combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish interests globally.

Ted Deutch was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of five siblings to Jean (née Mindlin) Deutch and Bernard Deutch. His parents, both now deceased, came from a Jewish family background; Deutch is the grandson of immigrants from Belarus and Lithuania. His mother, who did not attend college herself, emphasized educational opportunities for her children, ensuring all five pursued higher education.

Deutch was born on May 7, 1966, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the youngest of five children to parents who emphasized education and opportunity despite modest means; his mother, Jean Deutch, who never attended college herself, prioritized higher education for her children, while his father, Bernard Deutch, instilled optimism and belief in American meritocracy rooted in his own father's immigration from Eastern Europe. As grandchildren of Belarusian and Lithuanian Jewish immigrants, the family maintained strong ties to Jewish heritage, which influenced Deutch's early worldview amid a working-class, patriotic environment in public schools.

At Michigan, Deutch chaired the Hillel Governing Board, fostering his lifelong engagement as a Jewish and pro-Israel activist; his affinity for Israel developed in his teenage years through summer camps and intensified via campus Jewish organizations, shaping his focus on advocacy and community leadership alongside legal training. These academic and extracurricular experiences, combined with familial values of resilience and civic duty, oriented Deutch toward a career blending law, politics, and Jewish communal interests rather than private practice alone.
