In brief
Zach Hyman (born June 9, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Born in Toronto, Ontario, to parents Vicky and Stuart Hyman, he grew up in a Jewish family with four brothers in the Forest Hill neighborhood, where road hockey was a staple of his childhood. Hyman selected jersey number 18 to honor his heritage, as it represents the Hebrew word chai (life) in Jewish numerology.
Raised in a mostly secular Jewish household, Hyman attended Jewish day schools through high school, including the United Synagogue Day School and the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto, where he graduated with honors. His upbringing was familial and supportive, with parents who prioritized Jewish education and community ties, though the family's hockey focus often intersected with cultural traditions. Hyman's grandparents were Holocaust survivors, adding a layer of historical resilience to the family's identity, though this was somewhat distant from his generation's experiences in Toronto's Jewish community.
Hyman received his early education at the United Synagogue Day School in Toronto, followed by the Anne and Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (TanenbaumCHAT), where he completed Grade 12 in 2010. During his time at TanenbaumCHAT, he balanced rigorous academics, including courses in American politics, with his burgeoning hockey career, while also participating on the school's CHAT Tigers team as early as Grade 9.
