In brief
Alyson Hannigan is an American actress best known for her roles as the witch Willow Rosenberg in the supernatural television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) and as the kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014). Born Allison Lee Hannigan on March 24, 1974, in Washington, D.C., she is the only child of truck driver Albert Hannigan and real estate agent Emily Posner, who divorced when Alyson was two years old, after which she was raised primarily by her mother in Atlanta, Georgia.
Hannigan began her acting career as a child, appearing in commercials before kindergarten and making her feature film debut at age 14 in My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988), followed by her first leading television role in the short-lived sitcom Free Spirit (1989–1990). She graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1992 and later studied psychology at California State University, Northridge, taking time off from acting to complete her degree. Her breakthrough came with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where her portrayal of the intelligent, evolving character Willow earned critical acclaim, including a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television in 2002. Hannigan then gained further prominence in the comedy genre with her role as the quirky band camp enthusiast Michelle Flaherty in the American Pie film trilogy (1999, 2001, 2012). Her performance as Lily in How I Met Your Mother solidified her status as a television staple, winning her People's Choice Awards for Favorite TV Comedy Actress in 2010 and 2012.
Alyson Hannigan was born on March 24, 1974, in Washington, D.C., to parents Al Hannigan, a truck driver, and Emilie Posner, a real estate agent. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, after which she was primarily raised by her mother in Atlanta, Georgia, while her father relocated to Santa Barbara, California. Hannigan maintained occasional visits with her father despite the separation, but her upbringing centered on life with her mother in the Atlanta area.
Hannigan's ancestry includes Irish heritage from her father and Ashkenazi Jewish roots from her mother. She shared a particularly close bond with her mother, Emilie, who played a pivotal role in nurturing her early interests in the performing arts by encouraging her pursuits and providing emotional support throughout her childhood.
From the age of four, Hannigan gained early exposure to the entertainment industry through local theater productions and television commercials in Atlanta, including advertisements for brands such as McDonald's, Six Flags amusement parks, and Oreo cookies. These initial experiences, supported by her mother's involvement, laid the foundation for her interest in acting without formal professional commitments at the time.
