In brief

Andrew Viterbi is an Italian-American electrical engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur renowned for developing the Viterbi algorithm, a foundational method in digital communications for decoding convolutional codes, and for co-founding Qualcomm, a leading wireless technology company. Born in 1935 in Bergamo, Italy, to Jewish parents Achille Viterbi, an ophthalmologist, and Maria Luria Viterbi, a homemaker, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1939 to escape fascist persecution, eventually settling in Boston.

Viterbi's academic journey began at Boston Latin School, where he graduated fourth in his class in 1952, followed by earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957, focusing on communication theory. He then obtained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1962, becoming one of the institution's first recipients in the field. Early in his career, Viterbi worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1957 to 1963, contributing to telemetry systems for the Explorer 1 satellite, before joining the University of California, Los Angeles as a faculty member in 1963, where he taught digital communications until 1973.

Andrew James Viterbi was born on March 9, 1935, in Bergamo, Italy, to a Jewish family as the only child of Achille Viterbi, an ophthalmologist, and Maria Luria Viterbi, a homemaker.

Andrew Viterbi married Erna Finci in 1958, shortly after meeting her during a visit to Los Angeles while pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. Erna, born in Sarajevo to a Jewish family that fled Yugoslavia during World War II and sought refuge in Italy, shared Viterbi's immigrant experience as a European Jewish refugee escaping persecution. Their marriage endured for over 57 years until Erna's death in 2015 at age 81.

Viterbi's Jewish heritage, rooted in his Italian family's flight from fascist racial laws in, profoundly shaped his personal identity and cultural outlook, blending European traditions with American life. Erna's similar background from a Sephardic Jewish family in the Balkans further reinforced these influences in their shared life.
