In brief
Brian L. Roberts (born June 28, 1959) is an American businessman who has served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Comcast Corporation since 2002 and 1990, respectively. The son of Comcast founder Ralph J. Roberts, he joined the company in 1981 after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Under his leadership, Comcast expanded from a regional cable operator with $657 million in annual revenue and 2.4 million customers in 1990 to a global media and technology company with operations in broadband, video, voice, wireless, and theme parks through subsidiaries like NBCUniversal. Roberts, whose net worth is estimated at $1.5 billion as of October 2025, has also been involved in sports as chairman of Comcast Spectacor, owner of the Philadelphia Flyers NHL franchise and the Wells Fargo Center arena. A competitive squash player, he won gold and silver medals representing the United States at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Brian L. Roberts was born on June 28, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Ralph J. Roberts and Suzanne Fleisher Roberts. His father, Ralph Joel Roberts (March 13, 1920 – June 18, 2015), founded Comcast Corporation in 1963 after a career in sales, including door-to-door peddling of belts, phonograph records, and Muzak systems. Ralph Roberts, along with partners Julian A. Brodsky and Daniel C. Aaron, acquired a small cable system in Tupelo, Mississippi, marking the entry into the nascent cable television industry, which at the time served fewer than 1 million U.S. households. The family was Jewish, with roots tracing to Eastern European immigrants, and Ralph's entrepreneurial ventures provided a backdrop of business innovation and risk-taking.
Roberts competed in squash at the Maccabiah Games, an international multisport event for Jewish athletes held in Israel, on six occasions. These participations included the 18th Maccabiah Games in 2009, where he actively played the sport. In recognition of his contributions to squash and Jewish sports, he was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
Born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia on June 28, 1959, Roberts is the son of Comcast founder Ralph J. Roberts and Suzanne Fleisher Roberts. His father's company was co-founded in 1969 with Jewish partners Julian A. Brodsky and Daniel C. Aaron during a poker game among friends. Roberts has maintained ties to his heritage through philanthropy, including donations of squash courts in Ra'anana, Israel, and support for Maccabi USA, the U.S. branch organizing Jewish athletic teams.
