In brief

Bruce George Sundlun (January 19, 1920 – July 21, 2011) was an American businessman, military aviator, and Democratic politician who served as the 71st Governor of Rhode Island from 1991 to 1995. Born in Providence to parents of Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant descent, Sundlun attended local schools, Tabor Academy, and Williams College before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. As a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the Eighth Air Force's 384th Bomb Group stationed in England, he completed multiple combat missions until his aircraft, Damn Yankee, was shot down over Belgium in December 1943; he evaded German capture for six months by aiding the French Resistance in sabotage operations before escaping to Switzerland. Returning to the U.S., Sundlun flew ferry missions in the Pacific Theater and later rose to colonel in the Air Force Reserve, earning decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart.

In civilian life, Sundlun prosecuted cases as a federal attorney, led the Outlet Company in broadcasting, and held executive positions in satellite communications such as COMSAT, amassing significant business influence in Rhode Island. Elected governor in 1990 with 75 percent of the vote—the largest margin in state history—Sundlun confronted a severe financial crisis involving insolvent credit unions and banks, ordering their closure to avert broader collapse, a move that drew both criticism for short-term hardship and praise for stabilizing the economy through federal intervention and restructuring. Known for his commanding presence and decisive style, Sundlun's tenure emphasized infrastructure investment and public works, reflecting his New Deal-influenced worldview, though he declined reelection amid personal and political challenges.

Bruce George Sundlun was born on January 19, 1920, in Providence, Rhode Island, as the first child of Walter Irving Sundlun and Jan Zelda Colitz Sundlun. His parents were part of a Jewish family whose grandparents had immigrated from Lithuania.

The Sundlun family lived on Providence's East Side, in a community with a growing Jewish population amid Rhode Island's early 20th-century industrial economy. Walter Sundlun owned a local department store, immersing the household in retail commerce and entrepreneurial activity. His parents divorced when he was a boy, altering the family structure during his formative years.
