In brief
David Levy Yulee (born David Levy; June 12, 1810 – May 10, 1886) was an American lawyer, politician, and railroad executive who represented Florida in the United States Senate from 1845 to 1851 and again from 1855 to 1861, becoming the first Jewish member of that body. Born in St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, to a Sephardic Jewish family of Moroccan origin, Yulee immigrated to the United States as a child, settled in Florida Territory, and legally changed his surname in 1845 to incorporate his mother's family name, reflecting his heritage. As a Democrat and territorial delegate to the House prior to statehood, he advocated for Florida's admission to the Union and championed southern interests, including the expansion of slavery and states' rights.
Yulee's most enduring legacy lies in his role as the "Father of Florida Railroads," founding the Florida Railroad Company in 1853 and overseeing the construction of the state's first cross-peninsular line from Fernandina on the Atlantic to Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico, completed in 1861—a project reliant on enslaved labor that facilitated economic development through timber, cotton, and sugar transport from his own plantations. He owned extensive properties, including the Yulee Sugar Mill plantation, which employed hundreds of slaves for agricultural production. A staunch defender of slavery and secession, Yulee resigned his Senate seat in January 1861 following Florida's ordinance of secession and supported the Confederate cause, though his railroads were damaged during the Civil War, leading to postwar financial ruin and brief imprisonment. Despite facing antisemitism throughout his career, his contributions to infrastructure and politics shaped early Florida's growth, though his pro-slavery stance aligned him with the causal forces precipitating the sectional conflict.
David Levy was born on June 12, 1810, in Charlotte Amalie on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies (now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands). He was the son of Moses Elias Levy, a Sephardic Jewish merchant originally from Mogador, Morocco, and Hannah Abigail Noah, whose family also followed Sephardic traditions and resided in the Caribbean.
Moses Elias Levy descended from an affluent Sephardic Jewish lineage that had originated in Spain and Portugal before relocating to Morocco, where his family engaged in trade as merchants and advisors to local authorities. By the early 19th century, Levy had established himself as a prosperous trader in the West Indies, accumulating wealth primarily through timber exports and commercial ventures across the Atlantic world, reflecting a pattern of pragmatic economic adaptation common among Sephardic diaspora networks rather than insular communal isolation. Hannah Abigail Noah, born around 1780 in St. Eustatius, traced her Sephardic roots through migrations from Iberia to the Netherlands, England, and eventually the Caribbean islands, where her forebears pursued mercantile opportunities in colonial trade hubs. This heritage underscored a family emphasis on commercial enterprise and mobility within Sephardic trading communities, shaped by historical expulsions and subsequent global dispersal.
In 1819, at the age of nine, David Levy was sent by his father, Moses Elias Levy, from St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies to the United States, where he was enrolled in a private school in Norfolk, Virginia. He remained there until approximately 1827, making occasional visits back to the West Indies during this period. This relocation separated him from his family amid his father's ambitions to establish new ventures in American territories, reflecting broader patterns of Jewish migration seeking economic opportunities beyond the unstable Caribbean islands.
