In brief

Jennifer Michelle "Ginnifer" Goodwin (born May 22, 1978) is an American actress recognized for her leading roles in television dramas and animated films. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to a mother in educational technology and a father who owned a recording studio, Goodwin pursued acting after studying at Boston University, where she earned a BFA in 2001 and received the Bette Davis Foundation Prize for excellence in acting.

Goodwin gained prominence portraying Margene Heffman, the youngest wife in a polygamous family, in the HBO series Big Love from 2006 to 2011, a role that showcased her ability to handle complex family dynamics and moral ambiguities. She followed this with the dual portrayal of Snow White and schoolteacher Mary Margaret Blanchard in ABC's fantasy series Once Upon a Time (2011–2018), which blended fairy tale elements with modern storytelling and earned her Teen Choice Award nominations for fantasy/sci-fi acting. In film, she voiced the determined rabbit officer Judy Hopps in Disney's Zootopia (2016), contributing to the film's critical and commercial success as a voice performance emphasizing themes of perseverance and prejudice.

Jennifer Michelle Goodwin was born on May 22, 1978, in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents Tim Goodwin, who owned a recording studio, and Linda Kantor Goodwin, a specialist in educational technology who had previously worked as a teacher and for FedEx. Her mother's family carried Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, tracing to Lithuanian, Russian, and German Jewish roots, while her father's ancestry included English, Welsh, and distant German lines.

Goodwin has one sibling, a younger sister named Melissa Goodwin Shepherd, born June 30, 1980, who works as a stop-motion animator on projects including Robot Chicken. The family resided in Memphis throughout her childhood, where Goodwin grew up in a household influenced by her mother's Jewish background.

During her youth in Memphis, Goodwin participated actively in the local Jewish community, including involvement with the BBYO youth organization and synagogue attendance. She underwent a bat mitzvah ceremony at age 15—delayed to allow for extensive preparation—held on May 17 at Temple Israel, during which she delivered a 25-minute speech addressing Jewish identity.
