Julius Robert Oppenheimer grew up on Riverside Drive, the son of a German-Jewish immigrant who had done well in textiles and a New York mother who painted. He was brilliant, thin-skinned, and omnivorous — Sanskrit, French verse, and the hardest physics of the 1920s. Harvard, Cambridge, Göttingen: he collected teachers, then came home to build American theoretical physics at Berkeley and Caltech.
In 1942 the army asked him to gather a town of scientists in the New Mexico high desert. Los Alamos was his instrument. He hired the right people, translated between theorists and engineers, and kept a secret city pointed at a single date. On July 16, 1945, the desert lit up. A threshold had been crossed.
After the war he argued for international control and against an immediate crash program for the hydrogen bomb. In 1954 a security hearing stripped him of his clearance — a public humiliation dressed as procedure. He spent later years in Princeton, still a teacher, still a presence.
His Jewishness was cultural, Reform, and complicated. What he inherited was a faith in mind and a taste for moral difficulty. The century asked him to build a weapon. He did, and then he tried — imperfectly, publicly — to talk about what that meant. That second labor is part of the accomplishment.
