Jerry Lewis (born Joseph Levitch; March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017) was an American comedian, actor, singer, director, screenwriter, producer, and philanthropist renowned for his physical comedy style and contributions to film and humanitarian causes. Lewis first gained widespread fame through his comedy partnership with singer Dean Martin, forming the duo Martin and Lewis in 1946, which produced 16 films together until their split in 1956. Following the breakup, he pursued a solo career, starring in and directing multiple successful comedies, including The Bellboy (1960), The Nutty Professor (1963), and The Errand Boy (1961), often employing innovative techniques like video assist for precise comedic timing. His work earned him two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and France's Legion of Honour in 2006, reflecting his international acclaim, particularly in Europe where critics analyzed his films as auteurist endeavors. A defining aspect of Lewis's legacy was his philanthropy as national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), hosting the annual Labor Day Telethon for 45 years starting in 1966, which raised over $2 billion for research and support of neuromuscular diseases. In recognition of these efforts, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2009. Despite criticisms of his humor as overly juvenile by some American reviewers, Lewis's influence on comedy and his directorial innovations, such as multi-camera setups, demonstrated a mastery of visual storytelling grounded in precise physical execution rather than verbal wit.

In brief

Joseph Levitch became Jerry Lewis and, with Martin, a national habit. The split left him free to direct, to mug, and to invent a filmmaking style the French took seriously.

Offscreen he treated a telethon like a second vocation. The jokes were loud; the asking, year after year, was sincere.
