Karl Landsteiner (1868–1943) was an Austrian-born American biologist and physician best known for his pioneering discovery of the human ABO blood group system in 1901, which explained the agglutination reactions that had previously caused fatal complications in blood transfusions and laid the foundation for safe modern transfusion medicine. His work on blood compatibility, later expanded to include the identification of the Rh factor in 1940, transformed immunology and pathology, earning him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for the blood groups discovery.

Born on June 14, 1868, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, to Leopold Landsteiner, a prominent journalist and newspaper publisher with a doctorate in law, and Fanny Hess, Landsteiner grew up in an intellectually stimulating environment following his father's early death in 1875. He attended the German Imperial-Royal University of Vienna, earning his medical degree in 1891 after studying medicine, chemistry, and biology; he supplemented this with postgraduate work in chemistry at universities in Zurich, Würzburg, and Munich under notable scientists like Arthur Hantzsch and Emil Fischer.

Landsteiner's early career in Vienna included positions as an assistant at the University's Institute of Hygiene in 1896 and in the Institute of Pathological Anatomy from 1898 to 1908, followed by roles as prosector at the Wilhelminenspital from 1908 to 1919 and professor of pathological anatomy at the University of Vienna starting in 1911. During this period, he conducted his seminal experiments on blood sera and red cells from colleagues, identifying the A, B, AB, and O groups and publishing his findings in 1901, which demonstrated that incompatible blood mixtures led to clumping due to specific antibodies.

In 1922, Landsteiner moved from the Netherlands to the United States, joining the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York, where he spent the remainder of his career researching topics such as poliomyelitis transmission, bacterial toxins, and serological reactions. His later collaboration with Alexander Wiener on the Rh factor—named after its initial detection in rhesus monkey blood—revealed another critical antigen causing hemolytic disease in newborns, further advancing transfusion safety and prenatal care. Landsteiner became a U.S. citizen in 1929 and continued his work until his sudden death from a heart attack on June 26, 1943, in New York City.
