In brief

Martin and Lewis was the professional name of the American comedy duo consisting of singer and actor Dean Martin and comedian and filmmaker Jerry Lewis, who partnered from 1946 until their acrimonious split in 1956. Their act blended Martin's smooth crooning and debonair persona as the straight man with Lewis's chaotic slapstick, improvisational antics, and childlike clowning, creating a dynamic that captivated post-World War II audiences seeking escapist entertainment. Over their decade-long collaboration, they became one of the most popular comedy teams in history, dominating nightclubs, radio broadcasts, television variety shows, and starring in 16 Paramount Pictures films that collectively grossed tens of millions at the box office.

The duo's origins trace back to 1946, when Lewis, then a 20-year-old nightclub performer, first spotted Martin singing at New York City's Glass Hat club and later reconnected with him at the Havana-Madrid nightclub, where they rehearsed routines together. Their official debut occurred on July 25, 1946, at the 500 Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after a last-minute substitution for a no-show singer; the improvised performance, featuring Lewis heckling Martin onstage, was an immediate hit and launched their partnership. By 1949, they had signed with producer Hal B. Wallis and transitioned to Hollywood, debuting on film in My Friend Irma, a Paramount comedy that introduced their onscreen chemistry to wider audiences.
