Peter Alexander is an Austrian singer, actor, and entertainer known for his enduring popularity and decades-long career as one of the most beloved and successful performers in the German-speaking world. Born Peter Alexander Ferdinand Maximilian Neumayer on June 30, 1926, in Vienna, he emerged in the 1950s as a symbol of post-World War II lightness, charm, and economic recovery in Austria, earning the affectionate nickname "Peter the Great" among fans for his wit and versatility across stage, screen, and music.

Alexander appeared in approximately 50 film comedies starting in the 1950s, released more than 120 records featuring numerous chart successes, and maintained a prominent television presence for decades, including hosting his long-running variety program Die Peter Alexander Show. Renowned for his parodies, impersonations, and ability to connect with audiences through lighthearted entertainment, he achieved massive record sales and viewership peaks, cementing his status as a pioneer of German-language television entertainment. Described by Austrian leaders as a figure who brought joy to generations, Alexander retired from public life in his later years and died in Vienna on February 12, 2011, at the age of 84.

In brief

More than one Peter Alexander appears in the public record. This card follows the American television journalist, the one whose work lives on morning shows and election nights.

The cautious version of the story is still a solid one: a correspondent who shows up when the news is live and the facts are unfinished.
