In brief

Richard Edlund (born December 6, 1940) is an American visual effects cinematographer and innovator, best known for his groundbreaking contributions to special effects in blockbuster films, including the original Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark, earning him four Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects. A founding member of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in 1975, Edlund played a pivotal role in revolutionizing motion control photography and optical printing techniques, which enabled seamless integration of miniatures and matte paintings into live-action footage. His career, spanning over five decades, also encompasses founding Boss Film Studios in 1983, where he supervised effects for more than 40 films such as Ghostbusters (1984) and Die Hard (1988), and later freelance work on projects like Charlie Wilson's War (2007).

Edlund's early influences included a childhood fascination with photography in Fargo, North Dakota, followed by formal training at the University of Southern California Film School and service in the U.S. Navy's photography program. He entered the industry in 1964, contributing to Star Trek: The Original Series at Westheimer Company before joining ILM, where he developed the telecentric relay lens for optical printers to eliminate matte lines and advanced blue-screen compositing for scenes like the Hoth battle in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Beyond Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)—for which he received Oscars—he earned additional accolades, including an Emmy for Battlestar Galactica (1978), BAFTAs for Poltergeist (1982) and Return of the Jedi, and the 2013 Visual Effects Society Lifetime Achievement Award.
