In brief

Roy J. Glauber (September 1, 1925 – December 26, 2018) was an American theoretical physicist whose pioneering work in quantum optics earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2005 for his contributions to the quantum theory of optical coherence. As a professor emeritus at Harvard University, Glauber developed foundational concepts that reconciled classical wave descriptions of light with quantum mechanical photon behaviors, profoundly influencing fields such as laser physics and photon correlation statistics. During World War II, as an 18-year-old Harvard student, he contributed calculations to the Manhattan Project under J. Robert Oppenheimer, later earning his PhD from Harvard in 1949 before advancing theoretical physics at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study. Glauber's coherence theory provided the mathematical framework for understanding light's partial coherence, enabling precise predictions of optical phenomena essential to modern technologies like interferometry and quantum information processing.
