In brief
Sarah Michelle Gellar (born April 14, 1977) is an American actress, producer, and entrepreneur best known for portraying Buffy Summers in the supernatural television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), which earned her widespread recognition as a teen icon and action heroine.
Born in New York City to Rosellen Greenfield, a nursery school teacher, and Arthur Gellar, who worked in the garment industry, Gellar is of Russian and Hungarian Jewish descent and was raised by her mother after her parents' divorce. Discovered by a talent agent at age four, she began her acting career with a debut in the 1983 television film An Invasion of Privacy and gained early prominence with a Daytime Emmy Award-winning role as Kendall Hart on the soap opera All My Children (1993–1995). Her breakthrough came with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she starred as the titular character—a high school student destined to battle vampires and demons—for seven seasons, blending horror, drama, and humor in a role that solidified her status in 1990s pop culture. During this period, she also appeared in notable films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) as Helen Shivers, Scream 2 (1997) as Cici Cooper, and Cruel Intentions (1999) as the manipulative Kathryn Merteuil.
Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977, in New York City, as the only child of Jewish parents Arthur Gellar, a garment worker, and Rosellen Greenfield, a nursery school teacher. Her family heritage includes Russian Jewish ancestry from her father and Hungarian Jewish roots through her maternal grandparents, who were immigrants.
Gellar's parents divorced in 1984 when she was seven years old, after which she was raised solely by her mother in an apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side. As a single parent working just above the poverty line, her mother supported them through her teaching job, navigating financial hardships that shaped Gellar's early understanding of resilience and privilege. Gellar maintained limited contact with her father due to their estrangement, a rift that persisted until his death in 2001 at age 60. She has publicly reflected on the emotional impact of this absence, noting in interviews that she had no relationship with him and viewing it as a significant void in her upbringing.
At age four, Gellar was spotted by a talent agent in a New York restaurant, leading to her first professional work in a 1981 Burger King television commercial. This early exposure to the performing arts ignited her interest in acting, providing opportunities for travel and experiences that her family's circumstances might otherwise have precluded, while also helping to alleviate some financial pressures through her budding career.
