In brief

Sheldon Mayer is an American comic book artist, writer, and editor known for his pioneering role in the early comic book industry, his creation of the semi-autobiographical humor feature Scribbly and the long-running children's series Sugar and Spike, and his influential editorial work that helped shape titles such as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and the Justice Society of America.

Born on April 1, 1917, in New York City, Mayer entered the field as a teenager in the 1930s, assisting newspaper cartoonists and contributing some of the first original material to comic books, including features like J. Worthington Blimp and The Strange Adventures of Mr. Weed. He soon joined forces with publisher M.C. Gaines, helping launch All-American Publications in 1939, which introduced many enduring characters and later merged into DC Comics. As an editor for All-American and DC until 1948, Mayer oversaw the development of key superhero lines, mentored emerging talents including future industry leaders, and played a central part in establishing the superhero team concept through the Justice Society of America.
