In brief

Yakir Aharonov (born August 28, 1932) is an Israeli theoretical physicist renowned for his foundational contributions to quantum mechanics, including the co-discovery of the Aharonov–Bohm effect in 1959, which demonstrates that electromagnetic potentials can influence charged particles even in field-free regions. Specializing in the interpretation and paradoxes of quantum theory, Aharonov has identified over 30 novel quantum effects, reshaping understandings of measurement, entanglement, and reality in quantum systems. His work bridges theoretical physics with experimental verification, influencing fields from quantum information to cosmology.

Aharonov earned his B.Sc. in physics from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 1956 and his Ph.D. from the University of Bristol in 1960 under the supervision of David Bohm, where he developed the seminal Aharonov–Bohm effect during his doctoral research. After his PhD, he held faculty positions at Yeshiva University before joining the faculty at Tel Aviv University in 1967, rising to full professor and later becoming Professor Emeritus. In 2006, he moved to the United States as a Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Physics at Chapman University, where he holds the James J. Farley Professorship in Natural Philosophy and serves as Director of the Institute for Quantum Studies.

Yakir Aharonov was born on August 28, 1932, in Haifa, specifically in the suburb of Kiryat-Chaim, then part of Mandatory Palestine, to a Jewish family of Russian immigrant parents. Growing up in this coastal community during the British Mandate period, Aharonov's early years were shaped by the socio-political tensions of pre-state Israel, including the challenges of Jewish settlement and the lead-up to the 1948 War of Independence, which fostered a sense of resilience amid uncertainty.
