In brief
Charles H. Joffe (July 16, 1929 – July 9, 2008) was an American talent manager and film producer renowned for his partnership with Jack Rollins and for shepherding the careers of major comedians, most notably by securing artistic control for Woody Allen's films and co-producing many of them, including the Academy Award-winning Annie Hall.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to pharmacist Sidney Joffe and Mae Popper Joffe, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1950 with a degree in journalism and began his career managing bands while in school before joining the MCA talent agency. In 1953, Joffe partnered with Jack Rollins, and by the early 1960s, they had established Rollins Joffe, a powerhouse agency that represented groundbreaking and influential talents such as Lenny Bruce, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and David Letterman.
The couple adopted a son, Cory Joffe, when Carol was 53 years old; Cory, an African-American infant at the time of adoption, joined the family as a foster child who became a permanent member. This blended family navigated the complexities of racial and cultural differences, with Nicole Holofcener later exploring these dynamics in her film Lovely & Amazing, which drew from her brother's experiences growing up in a white Jewish household. Joffe served as a stepfather to Suzanne and Nicole, supporting their pursuits amid the family's transitions.
